Dear Part-time Faculty Colleague,

 

No, you're not seeing the same newsletter you received in September. It's just that the deeper you get into fall semester, the more things seem the same. For instance, our next MPFA social will be in the SAME place, same day of the week (Friday, of course) and the same time-just four weeks later. Those who came had a great time, so plan to be there:

 

MPFA Social in Ukiah - Friday, October 29, 5 p.m. @ El Sombrero Restaurant (the Cantina upstairs), corner of Main and Mill Streets. The next social will not be held in Ukiah. Last call for margaritas.

 

Election Update ­ Like finding out that Gadafi has been "elected" to another term in Libya, your 1999-2000 MPFA officers are (surprise!) the ones listed on your ballot. More than 25 ballots were returned, and the majority "selected" the named candidates for office. Thanks from the executive crew, especially to those who voted "none of the above." (It will be a choice in upcoming elections, but we hope not a majority position.) Janet Chaniot will fill the vacant third at-large director's seat on the executive committee.

 

By the way, we always need volunteers for MPFA/part-time faculty offices and committee assignments, and this fall is not too soon to consider yourself a candidate. For example, we will need to replace one representative on academic senate next fall. This is a very important position that gives you a chance to represent part-time faculty interests in the only college body that can stand up for all faculty in dealing with educational and professional issues. And we need new blood in the ranks of our four MPFA officers and three directors. Think about it-volunteering for these positions takes time and effort, but the alternative is more of the same, only less. Less of a voice, less of a choice.

 

MPFA Negotiations for 1999-2000 - Friday, October 29, 12:30 until 1:30 p.m., at the Eagle's Nest on the Ukiah campus. Your MPFA negotiating team (including CCA representative Alan Frey from Sacramento) will be there to discuss issues that are on the table this year. Our negotiators will be meeting with the district team later in the afternoon, so this is a timely opportunity to inform and be informed about bargaining positions and likely outcomes. Be informed-and have a say.

Executive board meeting - Monday, November 15, at 1 p.m. in the CTA office, Victory Theatre, 306 S. Main Street, Ukiah. All part-timers are welcome to attend and participate. We are also trying to schedule a STRS (teachers retirement system) workshop later in the day for those interested in the Social Security/STRS option and how it affects retirement.
