Parallel Logic
By Lefty Olguin, Director of Athletics at the College October 6, 1999Do you understand the financial intricacies of operating a California Community College? Do you understand the financial intricacies of operating the Ukiah Daily Journal?
College curriculums offer a variety of academic disciplines, such as Math, English and Biology. The college also offers Auto Mechanics, Theater, Dance and Agriculture. Even though they are not all considered academic, they are all instructional.
Your newspaper offers a variety of news, that targets the different interests of your subscribers, yet all sections offered as reading are considered, "The Daily Journal."
A California Community College is operated and maintained on State funding, generated by student enrollment.
Your newspaper is operated and maintained by the number of interested subscribers and businessmen in the community. I hope you are beginning to see the similarities between Mendocino College and The Daily Journal.
Football is a viable program at most college institutions of higher learning across America. Football is as much a part of college as Sociology or Psychology.
The Sports Page is a viable section of most newspapers across the country (including the Daily Journal), and is as niuch apart of the news as the want ads or the editorials. Every program on a college campus is equally important and serves different needs for different students. Every section of the newspaper is important and satisfies the varied interests of its readers.
The logic is simple It is the mission of every college to educate, and it is the mission of every newspaper to communicate. When an editor fails to communicate, it parallels the instructor who does not educate The finished product is a student, or subscriber who is deprived of the opportunity to learn and develop an opinion, free from bias. I would appreciate, for those who support athletics, an opportunity to share their views with the Mendocino and Lake County subscribers.
Sincerely,Lefty Olguin, Director of Athletics
