Part-time faculty News
April 19, 1999

Dear Part-time Faculty Colleague,

Spring break is only a memory, and the semester is fast drawing to a close.  So, we take this last opportunity to get together for another--
MPFA SOCIAL in Lakeport - Friday, May 14 at 5 p.m., at the Rainbow Restaurant, 2599 Lakeshore Blvd. in Lakeport.  From Ukiah and Willits, take Highway 29 south from Hwy. 20 to the Hill Road/Park Way exit.  Go left onto Park Way to Lakeshore Blvd., then turn right onto Lakeshore for about a mile to the Rainbow.  You Lake folks who missed the December social will have plenty of time to plan for this one!

MPFA Executive Committee meeting Tuesday, April 27 - 11:30 - 1:00, CTA conference room, Victory Theatre, 306 S. Main St., Ukiah.  Negotiations, business, lunch, whatever.  All MPFA members are invited, board members are coerced into attending.

Scholarship News - The MPFA scholarship committee read through 136 applications before selecting six students to interview.  After the smoke had cleared, the committee chose four recipients for 1999-2000 awards.

The Erica Enzer Scholarship, named in honor of our late colleague, was awarded to:

Laura O'Bierne of Ukiah.  This year the MPFA's principal scholarship will provide $400.

Three other recipients selected for $200 scholarships were:

Theresa Ramsay of Upper Lake,
Daniel Hendrickson of Lucerne (who rode all the way from Lake County on his bicycle for the interview!) and Potter Valley High School senior

Nicholas Toy who will be coming to MC in the fall semester.

The scholarship presentations will be made at the spring academic awards ceremony at the Center Theater on the Ukiah campus, Friday May 14 at 7 p.m.  MPFA director Paulette Arnold will be presenting the four scholarships. Thanks to all MPFA members for contributing part of your dues to make it possible for us to further the education of these very deserving students.

Bequest - Speaking of Erica Enzer, MPFA has received a check from her estate.  Those of you who remember her know of her great generosity of spirit, dedication to principle and to the education of our students.  The $4000 gift to MPFA demonstrates her determination to keep doing good things for people, even after she is no longer with us in body.

Negotiations have begun for our 1999-2000 contract, with the MPFA team putting our requests on the table.  Besides asking for improved pay, exploration of benefits, expansion of the office hour program (due to start in the fall '99 semester) and greater job security, the team has asked the administration to look into hiring permanent (pro-rata) part-time faculty.  Penelope Laidlaw (Lake) and Hans Delyser (Ukiah) are our negotiators this year, with Janet Chaniot (umpteen years of experience!) as an alternate.

Stay tuned.

Neill Bell
