Mendocino College Part-time
Faculty Association
MPFA News, February 22, 1999

Dear Part-time Faculty Colleague,

For those of you who threw away the last (Feb. 10) infrequent flier without reading the first story, we have an new contract. If you like the new contract, and would like to join in a celebration (or if you don't and want to gripe), join us at the

MPFA Social in Ukiah - Friday, February 26 at 5 p.m., at your CTA conference room. It's located in the Victory Theatre building, 306 N. Main Street (or 367 N. State Street, if you don't mind going around to the back of the building where the conference room is), two blocks north of Perkins St.

There will be food, drinks--soft and otherwise--and a chance to see the facilities of our parent CTA organization's regional resource office.
Aside from the camaraderie, you really can discuss important part-time issues like the 1999-2000 negotiations, which begin this spring. Drop in--we'll be around until 7 p.m.

Volunteer - One of the things that every organization needs from time to time is a volunteer. We know part-timers are very busy people, and often "get volunteered" at the college by full-time staff. And, it's even been rumored that some part-timers aspire to have a real life. Okay. We still need a few good women and men to volunteer for some important jobs.
Scholarship committee - One of the best things you can do for yourself and our students is to volunteer to help select recipients for MC scholarships. There is one opening on the college committee that will review applicants for MC Foundation and other organizational funds. But most of all, we need a few people who can devote a few hours to screen MPFA scholarship applications and/or interview students. You get to work with a great bunch of fellow part-timers, meet some inspired students and give away money--including a fund established by our late colleague, Erica Enzer.

Academic senate - Part-timers have two seats on senate, the faculty body involved with college governance. Laurie Vazquez completes her two-year term in August, and will be stepping down as our senior senate representative, while Neill Bell will continue for the second year of his term. Senate meetings take place weekly at college hour (12:30-1:30) Thursdays on the Ukiah Campus. Our voice within the college depends in part on our participation in planning/governance committees like senate. If you are interested in serving on this or any other standing college committee, please volunteer!

How to Volunteer - Simply drop a note in the MPFA box in Ukiah (centers' mail gets hauled over/down the hill daily), call Neill at 463-1461 or e-mail us at the website above or directly to Neill <nbell@pacific.net> or <nbell@mendocino.cc.ca.us>.
