Ways to keep in touch

College Mailboxes

The basic communication tool now provided by the college. We use them extensively. They are available on all campuses. In Ukiah, they are in the mail room of the administration building (right next to the computer labs).

Answering Machine:

Students and others wishing to communicate with part-time faculty at the Ukiah campus can leave a message at

468-3453. Messages are transcribed and put in the part-timer's mailbox.

MPFA Socials:

Join us for refreshments, light food and discussion on Friday, August 28, from 5 to 7 pm at the Toqueria Michoacan, 2200 N. State Street, Ukiah (1/4 mile south of Hensley Creek entrance to the Ukiah campus)

Look us up in the halls or in our "office"

80% of the faculty at Mendocino College are part-timers, so let's get acquainted. It's not that easy, of course. Only a few of us share the same schedule. We mostly catch each other as we pass in the halls. Besides, it's hard to find a decent place to meet or to sit down and talk. But let's do it anyway. We have a part-time office, Room1167, a pitiful place. We can fix it up. We can certainly make it interesting. It may never be the Cafe Beaujolais, but at least it can be a communication center. Come by, someone may be lurking there. It's really kind of a central place (on the Ukiah campus), a few steps from the mail room. Leave a note there. Or leave a message on the newsletter phone (462-4543). Oh yes, if you have any ideas about how to fix up Room 1167s, come by in your work clothes and we'll do it.

Newsletter

The newsletter is for our mutual communication, to agree and to disagree-as agreeably as possible-to help us find our common goals and to celebrate our successes.

We want to have some articles that are close-up looks at what part-timers are doing in the classroom and in the field; So if you or someone you know has a great learning experience to talk about, please tell us.

(Phone: Lakeport, 743-1310; Willits, 459-5310); or Ukiah 462-4543 (fax 462-6873)

E-mail access

Part-timers may soon have E-mail access through the college (see page 3). We hope so. We'll be ready. Our organizational e-mail adress is:

mpfa@zapcom.net

Web site

At this moment we are setting up our site. It's wide open space right now. A new frontier. Just as with the newsletter, we want to know what you are doing and what you find interesting. Tell us about a great new learning experience. Maybe you had a terrific idea that went through channels and was never seen again. It happens. Tell the webfolks about it.

There are important (and not so important) controversies to be explored, too. Anything we write can be posted on the web (libel excluded of course) plus there are scores of interesting links to be explored (see page 4 Well, maybe those won't sound interesting to everyone, but believe us there are plenty more.)

We're totally open to ideas. For more information call our webmaster, Jon (462-3427) or the newsletter staff (462-4543).

Our web address is: www.zapcom.net/~mpfa

Listserv

A listserv is an Internet discussion group. Messages directed to the group are automatically sent to all members of the group, an arrangement that has tremendous advantages for group decision-making. If you want to take part in the interesting day-to-day work and discussion of our union, E-mail us at mpfa@zapcom.net and we will set you up on the listserv.

Coming soon: Part-timers' Radio Show

Janet Chaniot is talking to KZYXandZ (90.7 amd 91.5 FM) about a radio show by and for part-time educational workers.

By the way, Bob Laughton (outgoing MPFA president) has a great computer show with Jim Heid called "Point and Click Radio" on KZYXandZ every Wednesday evening at 7:00.
