Frequently Asked Questions
About Ukiah HOURS

What is local currency?
Local currency represents value in our region. We can exchange it with each other for goods and services. It is accepted throughout the Ukiah trading region (Potter Valley to Hopland), and can be used in conjunction with U.S. dollars. Our program is modeled after Ithaca, NY's Ithaca HOURS.
The bills are denominated in hours. You work one hour, you get paid one hour.

Who uses it?
Everyone can use it. There are local currency programs in over 60 regions in the U.S and throughout the world.

How does it work?
It's easy. Sign up by carefully considering any services or goods you would be willing to sell for HOURS. You'll get four HOURS in exchange for your pledge to participate, and you'll receive a directory listing other persons and businesses who have goods and services for sale in HOURS. Then start trading!

How can I get involved?
There are two ways once the program is fully operational. First, you can sign up and receive 4 HOURS. Second, if you'd like to help promote local currency, we have steering committee meetings once a month that you can attend (call 462-4543 or use email address below for details), and Member pot luck dinner/meetings will be held starting when the program officially begins in early summer.

Is local currency legal?
Yes, it is legal in the United States so long as the currency (bills) appears distinct from Federal Reserve Notes and is not used for interstate commerce.

How much is one HOUR worth?
At least U.S. $10.00. This represents an average wage, but also a livable wage. We encourage persons to trade services at equal wages.

What is it backed by?
It is backed by each member's pledge of offering goods and services and our commitment to trade it with each other. The U.S. dollar is backed by debt. Our Ukiah HOURS will have the benefit that it is rooted in the Ukiah trading region. It doesn't leave our communities (Potter Valley, Redwood Valley, Ukiah, Hopland); therefore, our wealth circulates around us.

Who runs the program?
We all do. We are just normal folks who are creating this opportunity to use local currency to value each other's skills and talents. We will be printing the money and distributing it to those pledging their participation. Join us to help build our local economy and our communities.
