Saturday, February 14, was Valentine's Day and the perfect occasion for a dance benefit. And as expected the annual "Event of the Heart" was hosted at Carl Purdy Hall. This event is a benefit for MCAVN (Mendocino County AIDS Volunteer Network) and is always well attended by the community at large. The "Event of the Heart" is an occasion when community members of all walks of life join together to support a worthwhile cause.
Last weekend's event was especially oriented toward the community. After the catered dinner and silent auction, a local funk band, Warty Gourd, opened the musical half of the evening. Their eclectic beats and funky rhythms kept the crowd's toes tapping until the main act came to stage. Wild Mango then brought their Latin jazz sounds to the ears and hearts of Ukiah. I can't say that they lived up to the standards set by "Event of the Heart" regulars Pele Juju, but they sure kept the crowd dancing and sweating until the lights and security ushered everybody out by 1 A.M..
I really enjoyed boogying down to the jamming rhythms of Warty Gourd
and Wild Mango on Valentine's Day. It was a great opportunity to party with
various friends and acquaintances within the community. I also met a great
deal of wonderful people and had lengthy conversations with friends whom
I hadn't seen for months. All in all, the "Event of the Heart"
continues to be one of Ukiah's largest social gatherings and a great place
to have a fun evening on Valentine's Day with your sweetheart.
