1) David Solnit's Globalize Liberation in Albion May 26.

The New Radicalism, Popular Power in Argentina, & Ending the US War for Empire: A Northern California Tour with Marina Sitrin and David Solnit.
Marina Sitrin edited "Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina," an oral account of the recent autonomous social movements in Argentina that have given many people power over their own lives, forced the cancelation of the IMF debt and overthrown their government. Marina is a New York City-based activist who has lived in Argentina. SheÕs a writer, popular educator, lawyer, dreamer, cofounder of the People's Law Collective and currently works with Woomera, a no-borders immigrants rights group.
David Solnit edited "Globalize Liberation: How to Uproot the System and Build a Better World," an organizing and inspiration manual and an expression of the "new radicalism." David is a founder of Art and Revolution, who popularized the use of art, street theater and giant puppets for social change. He is an organizer of the sucessful direct action shutdowns of the WTO in Seattle in 1999 and of the San Francisco Financial District the day after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Currently he is applying a people power strategy to end the war and occupation of Iraq and the policies of empire behind it with the People Powered Strategy Project and Courage to Resist (
http://globalizeliberation.org/).
May 26, Thursday, at the New Albion School (3 miles up Albion Ridge Road), 7pm potluck, 7:30pm program: opening with a theatrical performance by Sherry Glaser, then Marina Sitrin and David Solnit talking about The New Radicalism. Call 937-2646 for more information.

2) Film on "media manipulation" in Ukiah May 26.

"ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE"
Free Video Showing this Thursday, May 26th, 7:00 pm at Paradise Pizza, 237 N. Orchard Ave., Ukiah.
The Ukiah Valley Alliance for Democracy presents a free community viewing of the film Orwell Rolls In His Grave.  The showing will take place at 7:00 pm at Paradise Pizza, 237 N. Orchard Ave. in Ukiah (adjacent to JC Penney).  Come early to purchase dinner or call in your order at 468-5102.
Orwell Rolls In His Grave, directed by Robert Kane Pappas, provides a vital forum for ideas that will never be heard in mainstream media.  From Globalvision’s Danny Schechter: “We falsely think of our country as a democracy when it has evolved into a mediacracy - where a media that is supposed to check political abuse is part of the political abuse.”  >From the very size of the media monopolies and how they got that way to who decides what gets on the air and what doesn’t, this film moves through a troubling list of questions and news stories that go unanswered and unreported in the mainstream media.
This film showing is part of the ongoing Video Night series sponsored by the Ukiah Valley Alliance for Democracy, a non-partisan group of individuals devoted to promoting awareness and local democracy.  To learn more, contact the Alliance at
AFD_Ukiah@yahoo.com or 472-0724.  Find a calendar of these and other local events and monthly meetings at http://www.my.calendars.net/Ukiah_valley_AfD

He says the Left needs to learn how to frame issues so it can reassert progressive values and regain popular support.
On Friday, May 27, at the Fort Bragg High School auditorium, George Lakoff will sign books at 6pm and give a talk and answer questions at 6:30. On Sunday, May 29, he will sign books in Mendocino at Gallery Books from 1-2pm

Richard Heinberg is one of the key thinkers about the coming crisis we face as the world's supply of oil reaches its "peak" and then diminishes. He is a journalist, educator, editor, lecturer, and a Core Faculty member at the New College of California where he teaches a program on Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community.  Heinberg is the author of six books including The Party's Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies, Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World and Cloning the Buddha: The Moral Impact of Biotechnology.

7) "Willits Stories" play in Willits June 4.

The Willits Community Theatre presents "Willits Stories", a compilation of humorous "letters back home" by Willits resident Don Sickles. When Don and his wife Kyle moved to Willits after retiring from southern California, Don wrote a letter each week to his former co-workers. The letters continued for a few years, relating the differences in lifestyles from urban to rural living in our unique, small town. Don's keen observations, witty reparte and hilarious descriptions of his new life in Willits will be presented in four venues. Each venue holds seventy-five people. After each forty-five minutes presentation, at which each will feature "grazing food", each group will move to the next location - all within one block of the Willits Community Theatre. After the four presentations, a grand finale will convene at the Willits Community Center.
This event is for ONE DAY ONLY, June 4th! Tickets, in advance, will be available in Willits at Goode's Stamp Shoppe, Leaves Of Grass Bookstore and the Willits Chamber of Commerce office for $20, $25 the day of the event. There are only 300 tickets! Be sure to get yours to hear famous (or infamous?!) local Willits residents Bill Barksdale, Lanny Cotler, Margie Handley, Jay Gordon, Bob Brumback, Lawren Giles, Dianne Marshall, Gene and Carly Stewart, Lynn Kennelly, Joe Dowling and others who will be scheduled to participate in this great community event!  More information can be obtained by calling the Willits Community Theatre at 459-0895.
