I live at a beautiful place called Round Mountain Ranch, and unlike my partner, Gabrielle Welford, I don't travel much. Well, Henry David Thoreau didn't travel much either. You've heard of Thoreau. He was a hella rebel. Anyway somebody asked Thoreau why he didn't get around more and he said, to the contrary, "I have traveled widely around Concord."
So I get around Mendocino County pretty much. For a couple of years I was a member of the board of our community radio station, KZYX, and that got me around to parts of the county I hadn't seen for awhile. And actually, since I met Gaby about two years ago, I've traveled quite a bit, for me. I went to Hawaii to fetch Gabrielle. To do that I had to fly in an airplane and everything. Pretty exciting. I was there to help Gaby get packed up, and while I was there she showed me around and I met some of her down home Hawaiian friends. Some of these folks are genuine native Hawaiians and most of Gaby friends were advocates of "Hawaiian Sovereignty" which means that they don't believe that the U.S. actually owns Hawaii. It's a long story and if you want to know more about that look at Gaby's web pages. And last summer, I flew back to Westerville, Ohio, for my high school's 50th Reunion (I had a really great time. I hope I can find a way to express some of those good feelings.) and continued on to the East Coast where I helped Gaby get her mother packed up to move from Weston, Massachusetts to Berkeley, California. While there I helped Gaby put together the Welford family archives. I've lived here in Mendocino County, mostly in the Ukiah Valley, for over 20 years. I am still doing electrical wiring for friends and neighbors and still doing desktop publishing and helping produce publications of various kinds. Right now I'm working with a few other activists to put our a newsletter for a local organization called The Mendocino Environmental Center (MEC). For the last couple of years I've been working with the MEC and it's radio station, KMEC. And for a couple of years before that, I was a member of the board of KZYX. I wrote some things that were somewhat controversial (read truthful) and which I think have stood the test of time. For more about that see the Mendocino County Media Forum. More to come. . . . King |
