Writings Of Interest To Those
Who Love This WorldDear reader,
I have chosen these pieces (below), written shortly after the attacks of September 11, to broadcast as widely as I can. The authors are Americans of integrity and eloquence and their perspective is part of the discussion going on all around our country. And yet, if you are getting your news mostly from television and newspapers, you probably haven't heard or seen any of these articles.
Susan Sontag's piece says so well what I felt atfter 9/11. Whenever I read it I am shocked, angered, and inspired. I'll always think of her as a hero. The rest of these pieces are worth reading and rereading. They are as relevant today as they were 5 years ago. Events, especially the Iraq war, have only verified them. Nothing has changed. Unfortunately. Not yet.
The photo above was taken the day after 9/11, on State Street in my home town, Ukiah California. Hundreds of flags lined the street. I hated it. To me all those flags were there to discourage thought and guide us toward patriotism and revenge. These writings have kept me hopeful about the chance of surviving this era.
